Sodium Battery Operating Temperature – What You Need to Know

If your car struggles to start on cold winter mornings, or you’ve had batteries die faster in summer heat, temperature is usually the reason. Most batteries can‘t handle extreme cold or heat — sodium-ion can.

1. Three Temperatures That Matter

Every battery has three temperature limits you need to know:

Discharge temperature – how cold or hot it can still work
Charge temperature – how cold it can be safely charged
Storage temperature – how to store it when not in use

2. Discharge Temperature – Will Your Car Start on a Cold Morning?

Lead-acid	-20°C to 50°C
LiFePO₄ (lithium)	-20°C to 60°C
Sodium-ion	-40°C to 70°C

At -18°C, lead-acid loses 30-50% of its starting power. That‘s why your car might not start on a freezing morning. Sodium-ion delivers 800A CCA at the same temperature — so your car starts, not struggles.

3. Charge Temperature – The One Most People Miss

Lead-acid	Limited below -10°C
LiFePO₄ (lithium)	❌ Blocked below 0°C
Sodium-ion	0°C to 55°C

LiFePO₄ batteries can‘t charge below 0°C without damage. That means if you park outside in winter, your lithium battery might not charge at all. Sodium-ion charges normally — no pre-heating, no waiting.

4. Storage Temperature – If You‘re Not Using It

Up to 1 month	-20°C to 45°C
Up to 3 months	0°C to 45°C
Up to 1 year	0°C to 25°C

For long-term storage, keep it between 0°C and 25°C. Sodium-ion self-discharges at only ~1.5% per month – far lower than lead-acid (3-5%). So if you store your vehicle for the winter, it still has charge when you come back.
